Fantastic Four Laser Sculpture

Fantastic Four Laser Sculpture (138,427 bytes)

6.75" wide x 7" tall
Limited edition of 500
based on the artwork of John Byrne
Lasermach, Inc.

Laser Sculptures are laser cut steel statues featuring characters from the world of cartoons and comic books. The characters on the Laser Sculptures are based on artwork taken directly from comic books and cartoons. These limited edition collectible statues are thus faithful representations of classic renditions of timeless characters. The Fantastic Four Laser Sculpture features Galactus as the background and Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, The Thing, and The Human Torch in battle against the Devourer of Worlds. The piece is one of the seven Marvel Series II Laser Sculptures officially licensed by Marvel Entertainment, Inc. and is shown above by itself and below along with the rest of the sculptures in its series.

The Fantastic Four Laser Sculpture, as well as many others can be purchased at www.lasermach.com while they are in stock (since they're limited edition collectibles). Matt Ligot of Lasermach, Inc. describes how the Laser Sculpture was made:

"Laser Sculptures are laser cut steel statues featuring characters from cartoons and comics. The character cut outs are based on artwork taken directly from the comic books – this is in an attempt to stay as true to a particular artist's rendition as possible.

"All of the individual pieces are laser cut and etched steel. These pieces go through various stages of buffing, polishing and then welding together. The welded sections are custom coated to my specifications and then assembled. I do almost all of the work here in my shop (design, cutting, welding, assembly) – I do not do the special coating of the metal.

"I made the FF sculpture more as a comic fan than anything else. It had seemed to me that there really wasn't a piece out there that had all of the FF in it (not counting prints and posters). Since I'm a big FF fan, I figured I'd beat them to the punch.

"I knew how I wanted to position the characters around the statue (this was dictated by their powers and by wanting to balance out the piece) and I knew that I wanted Galactus as the 'background' (see note).

"I went with Galactus because in my mind it fit the piece the best. This is both from a fan perspective and from a designing aspect. I don't have to tell you why, as a fan, Galactus was the answer. From the design aspect – Galactus worked due to this size in comparison to the FF. It gave me something I could center all of the characters around while also giving a very dramatic (if not cool) presentation to the sculpture. If I took the characters off this sculpture and put them in the exact same spot around the FF logo or Baxter Building (Freedom Four Plaza, etc.) the impact wouldn't be the same.

"Note : My sculptures are made up of a background (that is welded to a base) and a character(s). The background is simply to support the character. This is done via a custom stud that is welded to the back of each character. The studs let me position the character in almost anywhere on the piece – thus allowing me to use almost any pose I find fitting to the character. I try to have the background associated to the character as much as possible – this helps keep the presentation from getting boring.

"All of the art on this sculpture is based on John Byrne's 'Trial of Galactus' story.

"The sculpture is limited to 500 pieces and was produced around July '97. It was listed once in Diamond's Preview's around the same time."

The piece is very well crafted and very sturdy. One of the appealing things about it is that even though the Fantastic Four Laser Sculpture is a limited edition collector's statue, it's looks and feels durable enough to put on a desk and enjoy without having to worry about an accidental nudge damaging it. Also, the art used as a basis for the statue was very well chosen. The Fantastic Four look as though they're valiantly trying to put up a fight against colossal odds. Galactus looks regal and aloof, more powerful than the mortals' wildest imaginings. In my humble opinion, this is a very nicely done item and if you've got the cash to spare, definitely go for it.
