Almost a year has passed since the events that led the Empire to war, and only a few recognize an ancient evil has awakened in the Shadowlands. Too concerned with their struggle for the Emerald Throne, the Clans continue to do battle with each other, allowing an undead sorcerer to strengthen his army of gibbering madmen and porcelain-masked zombies. The Crab fight a two-front war with the Shadowlands and the Empire, while the Crane is crippled by Scorpion sabotage. The Champion of the Lion follow a valiant but naive samurai-maiden marching into a trap while the Phoenix are slowly corrupted by the twelve black scrolls. The warnings of the Naga have gone unheeded, the Unicorn face the horror of the Shadowlands alone, and Kachiko's plans for ruling the Empire are undermined by those who have sworn fealty to a darker master.
