Diamond Empire
Rokugan 2000 for the Five Rings Card Game

Most of you reading this page are very likely familiar with the Legend of the Five Rings Collectible Card Game. If you're not, it's the card game upon which this web page, the story, and all the other stuff you've been staring blankly at is based. Since we were already tinkering around with the story and making up stuff for the RPG, we decided to make up some cards too.

Here's the cool part: if you try hard enough, these things are playable. Just print them out to the proper size, slip them into a plastic card collector's sleeve (you can buy them at card shops) slip a "real" L5R card in behind it to provide the back and you've made yourself a perfect proxy, with no noticeable change in thickness.

SO just make sure before you start that your opponent knows you're playing with our cards and is cool with it, and there should be no problem. Right now there are 36 cards on-line here. If you'd like to try to play Diamond Empire in the CCG, here are our...

RULES

First, agree beforehand on the minimum amount of Diamond Empire cards that each player must have in their deck. Right now, with the number of cards we've posted, a good number is about ten to twenty. Next: legalities. Pretty much play it by ear here. Play whatever you can agree on, but if Hida Kisada comes into play just use your imagination and pretend he's got a gun in his hand instead of a tetsubo. It's not really Hida Kisada, it's an R2K equivalent with remarkably similar capabilities. Pretend that Warhorses are actually motorcycles. That sort of thing. A good rule of thumb is to rule out any unique personalities that haven't shown up in the story-line. Thus, Experienced Hida Sukune or the Void Dragon are perfectly legal, but Matsu Tsuko is not. Events work the same way. Events which are generic to a particular time frame (Iris Festival, Inheritance, As The Shadow Falls) are legal. Those tied to a certain part of history long-past like The Twelfth Scroll is Opened are not playable. Events which fall into the cracks, like Restoring the Doji Treasury (restoring the Dojicorp Treasury?) are legal if both players agree in advance.

NEW CARD TYPE: PATHS

designed by Seth Mason

So what's a path? Paths are very similar to Rings, in that they represent a degree of knowledge and expertise that you have gained, rather than any material possession, holding, or hireling. Specifically, Paths represent how well you've met your destiny (as is noted by the flavor text on each one, featuring the prophecies of Isawa Saigo). They are treated in many ways like Rings, but they aren't effected by any of the things that affect rings and don't fulfill any sorts of winning conditions other than giving you some keen extra abilities.

How to use Paths: You don't have to be playing the clan indicated on the card to use a Path; it just suggests that you're fulfilling the role destiny has prescribed for that clan or faction. However, you can't have more than one copy of any one Path in your deck.

Very important Note:Only cards with the distinctive "Path" border count as Paths for the purposes of these rules. Cards such as The Path not Taken and Path of Wisdom do not count as "Paths"

Once you've fulfilled the conditions for putting a path into play, then out they go. Unlike Rings, Paths generally have to bow to use their abilities. Paths do not count as holdings. Paths do not count as Personalities. They do not count as regions or followers or anything else. They do count as "cards in play." They do count as paths. No, Paths cannot be assigned to attack or defend. (Pretty obvious stuff here but it does need to be said.)

Power Armor

Power Armor may only be attached to personalities with the "War Machine Pilot" trait. The "Power Armor" trait is considered to be equivalent to "Tetsukami." This is not an oversight, but an attempt to save room on the War Machine cards, which need all the space for text they can get. Thank you.

Programs

Program action cards work very much like kihos, in that you must bow a card you control with the Programmer trait in order to play them. Unlike kihos, Program actions do not count as spell effects.

Vehicles

You may notice several cards now feature the mysterious "vehicle" trait. A personality may only attach one Vehicle card at any time (just as one would a Weapon or Armor).
